Talks about the world’s food system, the ‘end’ of food, the proliferation of ‘cheap food’ that stuff but do not satisfy us, another look at ‘cheap food’, and looking for the Cuban model of food production.

We just got back from our first local farmer’s market trip here in the Phoenix area. We went to Vincent’s Saturday Market, which I found out about at LocalHarvest.org. I called them up last week to check their hours and I was lucky enough to catch them before they close until the fall! Their last day is on Saturday, May 17 and they’re going to open again October 4. They’re open on Saturdays, 9am to 1pm.

I’ve been to several local public and farmer’s markets and this is more like a weekend food bazaar than a harvest market. There were pastries, fresh juices, and awesome awesome pizza. It looks like the neighborhood meeting place under tents. It looks very European (as the site suggests, which I should have checked before going there) with the desert weather, and they do provide lots of tables and chairs to sit at and eat, and chat.

At the entrance is the fresh produce. We were looking for broccoli for the dish we’re cooking for Mother’s Day, but alas, there were none. There were other vegetables like chards, endives, carrots, etc. We were able to get some super huge strawberries, too.

The pizza corner at the very end and boy, was it ever so yummy. For $8, it’s not bad at all. Eat that with the fresh OJ sold beside it and there’s your Saturday morning brunch. We also found a guy who sells homemade mustard, and we went home with 3 jars of ‘em. They were so good.

All in all, although I was disappointed with the local produce part and the small size of the market (but I didn’t really expect a public market of a considerable size in Arizona), it was a fun place to go to. Something new. And from what I’ve seen, they have a really nice community in that area.

If you plan to go this Saturday (or wait till October), here’s their address and contact information:
